Welcome to GHOST MALL! The purpose of this site is to explore, document, and preserve Harvey, Illinois' infamous Dixie Square Mall. Opening in 1966, the mall would only survive less than thirteen years before shutting down due to the city's rise in crime. In 1979, the mall would serve as a Hollywood set as Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi were pursued in the Bluesmobile around, and inside the center by Illinois State Police cars for the cult-favorite The Blues Brothers, and unfortunately the mall would be left to rot away for 33 years.
While this site itself isn't very active, recent photos, stories, and other interesting bits of information about the mall are always being posted to the forums! We welcome anyone with an interest in, or who has explored the ruins of Dixie Square; as well as any retail and urban exploration fanatics!
--Thanks for visiting!
IT'S HISTORY, FOLKS! The last girders of the Penney building, on the northeast facade facing 151st street, came crashing down around 3pm on May 17, 2012!
While the mall is finally gone, this site shall continue. My demolition photos have been added to Flickr, and look for the final videos of the mall to be on YouTube in the near-future. A huge thanks to everyone who has explored the mall with me these past four years; be it online or in-person. I wouldn't have done it without you!
